Last week was a busy one, and Friday finally brought some relaxation with a visit to Islamorada, Florida. Our friends were attending a wedding there Friday night, so we drove on down (about 3 1/2 hours from us) and shared their hotel room. We stayed at the Guy Harvey Outpost, but the resort was lacking in several ways, unfortunately. I will say that the view was absolutely breathtaking — we were right on the oceanfront and could look out to the Atlantic’s turquoise water. But the room itself was expensive, drab and kind of old, with an extremely uncomfortable sofa bed. The staff were not very friendly and messed up our tab for drinks three times while we were at the pool bar. And that sand in the photo? Not sand. Kind of a light-colored gravel that hurts your feet.
Nevertheless, we loved Islamorada itself. The flowering trees and shrubs were in full bloom all over the island, and it felt very remote and “unplugged” from everyday life. We spent the afternoon on the ‘beach’ reading magazines and drinking Moscow Mules made in the room from the supplies we brought. (After the messed-up-tab incident, I didn’t feel too guilty about that.)
