Our honeymoon is booked, and I have no idea where we’re going!
Yup, you read that right. Jason has planned a surprise honeymoon in December to a secret location. He bought snorkel gear for us, and it requires a passport. Those are the only clues I have so far, but I’m already excited! I have lots of guesses rolling around in my head, but I really have no clue.
My friends and I play this game sometimes where you have to tell your top 5 destinations, with at least one of them a US destination and at least one an “out there” destination. Time and money are obviously irrelevant in the game.
In the spirit of daydreaming about amazing vacations, I thought I’d share my top 5 today:
1. California Wine Country – I love wine, especially good wine, and my favorites are usually California blends. I also fell a little in love with the idea of wine country after watching the movie Bottle Shock, and I’ve never been to California. I would bring the hubs on this one, or maybe a bunch of my girlfriends, and we would do wine tastings all day (including this one, by horse-drawn carriage) and have amazing fancy dinners. We’d stay at a B&B, ride the Napa Wine Train for dinner and maybe even do a hot air balloon ride. Ooh! And bring home lots of wine. And it would only cost a bajillion dollars.
2. South Africa – When I read Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, I knew that someday I wanted to see the places she writes about in the novel. I realize that the Democratic Republic of Congo, the main setting of the book, is probably too dangerous for me to visit, but I could definitely go to South Africa. I’d love to see Cape Town, Victoria Falls, and the game reserves. Of course, I’d go on a safari and ride an elephant somewhere along this trip, and I’ve heard that Cape Town has some great cuisine. And South African wine, of course!
3.Cruise the Greek Isles – Aside from the gorgeous blue waters that would have me taking
hundreds thousands bajillions of pictures, I would love to see the Acropolis and Athens and float in the Agean Sea. I taught The Odyssey for 11 years, so I have pictured ancient Greece so many times and would love to see it now. Plus, I’ve been to Verona, Italy, where Juliet supposedly lived, and driven through South Alabama where To Kill a Mockingbird takes place, so it’s only fair that I complete the 9th grade curriculum voyage, really. Maybe the cruise could even include Turkey, since I have heard it is just breathtaking.
4. New Zealand / Australia – Okay, yes, I know that’s really two places, but if I’m flying all the way over there, I’m seeing both for sure. I’d want to do all the touristy stuff — see the Opera House, pet a kangaroo, snorkel the great barrier reef — but I’d also go just for the culture. People from Australia seem so nice and laid back, everyone speaks English, and there’s probably a lot to do outdoors. Maybe I could even live in Australia someday? They have teaching positions, right?
5. Costa Rica – I would go zip-lining through the jungle and meet all kinds of monkeys and learn to surf on the Beaches of Tamarindo. Maybe take some kind of boat ride to see animals and see a coffee plantation. I think Costa Rica would also have a good balance of adventure and relaxation. Plus then I would have been to 5 of the seven continents on this trip.
For now, I’ll be imagining all these as possibilities for the Mystery Honeymoon Destination. Stay tuned over the next couple months to find out where we’re headed! Who knows, maybe it’s one of these?
