One of the most difficult parts of the holidays is finding a gift for everyone — without going broke! Between presents for friends, stuffing stockings, ornament exchanges, and Secret Santa, it can really add up. I find that the best way to save money and to give something people love is usually to make something. DIY to the rescue!
I was feeling creative this weekend, so I headed to Dollar General to pick up some inexpensive supplies to make gifts. Right near the front, I spotted the packs of Wrigley Extra® and Doublemint®. When I was in high school and college, my mom would often put these same packs of gum in our stockings for Christmas, and we’d be set for months!
I wanted to revive that tradition, so I grabbed one of each kind: Extra® Spearmint, Peppermint, and Polar Ice, and Doublemint®. Not expensive at all, and I’ve got a head start on our stockings this year!
I also wanted to use them to create a gift. Everyone has that one friend who is fanatical about having gum on hand at all times. For us, that person is our friend Eric. Eric always has gum, and he shares it with everyone who wants a piece after dinner. Isn’t gum great like that? The free sharing that’s usually associated? I think so!
Anyway, I exercised my creativity by making our friend Eric a Chewing Gum Christmas Tree! It was fun and easy, and the tree smells like mint, which was an added bonus. I used a foam cone, some wired ribbon, mini christmas lights, mini candy canes, a hot glue gun, and some straight pins — and a few packs of Wrigley Extra® gum!
I started by pinning the sticks of gum to the tree to create layers of “branches”. Then I added the ribbon, mini lights, and mini candy canes using my glue gun.
Finally, I made a star (using these easy directions I found online) out of a gum wrapper and attached it to the top.
It turned out so cute! I even wrapped up the remaining Wrigley Extra® and Doublemint® gum to give to Eric, along with the Chewing Gum Christmas Tree.
