If you know me, or you read this blog regularly, you know that boating is a huge part of my life. Today I’m sharing some boating memories throughout my life, inspired by Discover Boating!
Discover Boating is a national nonprofit program that helps people get out on the water and experience the fun of boating. Their website, DiscoverBoating.com, has a ton of interactive features about boating, including a boat selector tool, cost comparison tool, renting options, youth boating programs, education courses – even nautical lingo and how-to videos. After you read my boating memories, I know you’ll want to make your own, and Discover Boating is the perfect place to get your feet wet. (<– pun intended, ha!)
Growing Up Boating
My first boating experiences come from renting pontoon boats on summer holidays with my family as a kid. We’d cruise around Portage Lakes in Ohio and look at the lakefront homes, enjoying the breeze and the relaxing outing. Later my parents bought their own boat, and we’d take Zoey with us on Portage Lakes, and later, after they moved to Georgia, on Lake Lanier. My mom grew up boating and waterskiing, so she’d tow us behind on a tube. It’s no wonder I love boating so much now!
Our First Boat
Boating is also one of the things that brought Husband and I together. Back when he and I first started dating, he decided to buy a boat. It was a small fishing fishing boat, with a little engine on the back, and he spent a few weekends replacing the seats, cleaning it up, and getting everything in working order. We were both super proud of it, and I remember taking a photo of him standing next to it in my driveway. (Wish I could find that picture, but I can’t! Argh!) The first time we took it out, on the Chattahoochee River near where we lived, we almost forgot the plug! The water was icy-cold even though it was summer, and we fished for trout most of the day. We’d take it out on Lake Lanier too, once even to camp on an island on the lake. There are so many good memories of our first year dating wrapped up with that boat, and it broke our hearts a little to sell it when we moved to Florida.
Boating in Florida
Getting our own boat is definitely on our “to do” list now that we live in Florida, but until that time comes, we have the next best thing: friends with boats! Since our first few weeks here, our Florida friends have welcomed us with open arms — and taken us for boat rides! We’ve taken boats to Cabbage Key for dinner, to build a fire on Picnic Island, to go fishing, to spot dolphins, and most of the time just to float in the sea! Much of our life here revolves around the water, especially with our (very generous) friends! Someday we hope to have our owl vessel in the fleet, to spend time with our friends and, someday, our own kids.
