Husband has had some work trips to Melbourne, Florida lately, and this past week I finally got to tag along! We were only there for about two days (one night), but I had most of the first day to hang at the hotel after he went to work, and then we had a little time to hang out that night too. It was a short visit, but a fun one! Here are some of the things I loved in Melbourne:
We stayed at the Crown Plaza on the beach, and due to Husband’s many hotel points or status or whatever, we got a room upgrade. Our room was awesome, and larger than many of my past apartments. There was a full kitchen, a dining table, a living room area, and a separate bedroom, and the balcony ran the full length of the suite and looked directly out to the beach. There was even a pool view from the side window. I spent the afternoon reading my book on the beach and watching the little beach crabs digging homes. I seriously did not want to leave.
The View at Squid Lips
We chose a seafood place called Squid Lips for dinner because it was waterfront and, well, it was named Squid Lips. We had to see! The food was okay, but we were able to sit right next to the water with our feet in the sand, so that made it worth it. After dinner we walked out on the nearby pier, and then stumbled on a Pokemon Go hot spot on our way back to the car, with probably about 50 people all walking around looking at their phones. It was kind of hilarious.
Yes, it’s a shack. Filled with crazy statues and mannequins and a bra-filled chandelier. But the live music was pretty great, and the stage setup (a balcony overlooking the downstairs bar and across from the upstairs bar) was unique. It’s definitely an experience.
Watching the Sun Rise from the East Coast
We’re used to watching sunsets from our West Coast beaches, but since our balcony looked out over the beach, we woke up early and went outside to watch the sunrise. It was beautiful, and I couldn’t stop snapping pictures!
Breakfast at Backwater
This was a recommendation from a friend, and it might have been my favorite part of the whole trip. Located in downtown Melbourne, Backwater is an “old Florida” themed breakfast spot, with griddles built into the tables. You order pancake batter and toppings, and then you make your own pancakes right there at the table. (You can order regular entrees too that are cooked for you.) The pancakes were yummy, and we had fun making them. They also have truly fresh-squeezed orange juice and the best bacon. I even snapped a photo of the maps that have been made into wallpaper in the bathroom. I was obsessed. And our entire meal (two people) was only $24. Loved that place!
Not sure if we’ll go back for his work, but I hope we get to go back for fun sometime soon! Great East Coast adventure, and it makes me very thankful that I have the summer off to tag along. Have any of y’all been to Melbourne? What should I check out next time?
