Oh my, 2016. You were kind of a doozy. My “word” for 2016 was ‘adventure,’ and this year was an adventure in many respects. Maybe not always the one I expected or planned, but I guess, that’s life? All in all, it was a year of counterpoints: joy and sadness, excitement and restlessness. Here are a few highlights from our 2016!
January: We rang in the New Year on a very chilly night in Atlanta at our friends Becca and Craig’s new house. We also discovered Southern Fresh Farms and their monthly dinners — a great find! And the Pimiento Cheese Dip from this post is still one of my favorite appetizers to make.
February: We spent a weekend in Tampa and Ybor City, and I hosted a fun book club party with my girlfriends. I also had one of the best Valentine’s Days ever (and it’s usually not my favorite holiday) when Husband took me to see The Choice at the theater and for a romantic morning walk on the beach. My parents visited, and we went to Sarasota for a day to see the Ringling Museum of Art and Ringling Circus Museum. Oh! And I made my own marshmallows!
March: I hosted a dog tea party with Liz and her pup Emma, and I also bought a waffle maker for this post, which we use all the time now. We went to the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival at Disney, and I wrote this Disney post, which is one of my all-time most popular posts (and one of my personal favorite posts as well)! We even won 3rd place in a chili contest, and since we made multiple practice batches leading up to the winner, March was definitely a month where we ate a LOT of chili.
April: For Spring Break, we had a little Staycation (we do live in Florida, after all). We also did another Disney trip that included a visit to Disney’s Club Villain. It was such a cool and memorable experience! And I wrote this funny post about teachers the week before Spring Break. Oh, and my nephew, Elliott, was born!
May: May was super busy month, mainly because for an entire week of it, Husband and I chaperoned my school’s 8th grade trip to Washington DC. Are we crazy or what? It was a fun yet exhausting trip, and two favorite parts were the Botanic Gardens and the Smithsonian Museums. I went up to Ohio at the end of May for the weekend to meet my new nephew. I also love this margarita recipe and this DIY summer-inspired notepads post from May!
June: At the beginning of June I wrapped up my first year teaching at my school and then had all kinds of fun exploring nearby Bokeelia, Florida, creating this DIY drive-in movie night with Zoey, and writing about my boating memories. June was pretty laid back!
July: For as laid-back as June was, July was a month of travel! It started with my annual college-girlfriends weekend in Park City, Utah and some awesome hiking. I went to two different conferences (one teacher and one blogging) in Florida, and then we did 4th of July weekend in Orlando at Disney again. It was HOT, but we managed to play a round of golf at one of the Disney courses, see Animal Kingdom at night, and we got to have breakfast inside the Cinderella Castle. Towards the end of the month, I tagged along on Husband’s business trip to Melbourne, Florida. In between all the travel, I was doing some furniture flipping with my friend Liz and looking at real estate. And husband bought a motorcycle. :/
August: In August, three huge things happened mid-month. I started back at school (teaching a new subject), Husband started a new job, and we closed on a house and moved, after about 3 weeks of unexpected closing delays — pretty much all in a one-week span. It was total chaos! I thought I was going to lose my mind, but I did try to stay organized with these moving tags I created. Just before all that craziness, my dad came down to visit for a week and we made these delicious Caramel Waffle Cone Parfaits together!
September: If August was a blur of moving, then September was a blur of unpacking! I did lots of posts about organizing (like the laundry room reveal and DIY custom labels). Husband and I also managed a trip to Atlanta with friends, and another trip to Tampa with friends for the Distinguished Gentlemen’s ride on the new motorcycle.
October: Jason’s parents came for a visit, and then my mom came for a visit, so we had to get our guest room set up quickly! We did another trip to Disney for the 2016 Food and Wine Festival, and we celebrated our second anniversary (with this post about 24 things I love about my hubs). Awww, love!
November: I think I was hibernating a bit in November. I needed some days of staying in and lazing around after all that travel! I went biking on Sanibel one weekend, but that was pretty much it! I love this post from November about decorating our bathroom for the holidays and this one about a doggie holiday DIY, and I had a blast decorating the new house for the holidays. We also spent Thanksgiving week in Orlando with my sister’s family and my parents, doing the Disney thing again!
December: And just like that, it’s December again! I wrapped up the first semester at school, and then hopped on a plane to Boston for a weekend in the snow! Then I flew with Husband to Austin, Texas, for a few days (post still to come on that), and back home to Cape Coral. We were home for less than 48 hours before we hopped in the car to head to Dahlonega, Georgia, to celebrated Christmas with Husband’s family. It was delightfully lazy, with lots of time eating and hanging out, and even a little winery trip thrown in. Then we spent the last few days chillin’ at home with Zoey, and my cousin and his girlfriend came to visit from Palmetto, Florida. Tonight for NYE we are still not even sure what we are doing yet!
As crazy as 2016 was, I’m looking forward to wrapping it up tonight. Heading into 2017 with our first home together, a job and friends and a car and a puppy and a family that I love, and –I’m solidly convinced — the best husband on the planet. Counting my blessings and looking forward to a fresh and fun 2017! Cheers, y’all!
