Part of what I love about moving into a new home is deciding on the place to put each thing. As my dad used to tell me growing up, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Ever since, this has been my philosophy for keeping things tidy. Labeling that “place” for each thing is the key, though. This not only helps other people to find items or put items back, but it keeps you from just piling random stuff around the house. It’s a lot harder to just throw something in a drawer when that drawer is labeled with a specific item!
The first step is to sort items and find a place for them. I try to gather all the similar items from around the house and then sort them into categories. There is only ONE place in our house for cords and cables, for example. This helps us know what we have and what we need, and yes, it’s a little “Marie Kondo”-ish. (I do love her book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up!)
